Volunteer Opportunities
Landmarks is looking for devoted adults to train as volunteer docents (tour guides) to lead student tours. Tours are conducted Mondays through Fridays during school hours; therefore docents must be available to volunteer during those hours.
Training sessions start with first attending a the regular monthly volunteer meeting and will involve a introduction to specific walking tours.
Volunteer Meetings:
- The First Monday of Every Month
- 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
- Landmarks Offices in Station Square
Prospective docents must possess an interest in history and architecture, want to work with students and teachers, and be physically able to conduct a 2-hour walking tour. To prepare for training Landmarks suggests docents read Pittsburgh by Stefan Lorant and Pittsburgh’s Landmark Architecture by Walter C. Kidney.
There is no charge to prospective docents for training. Landmarks provides many opportunities to lead tours and other programs throughout the month to accomodate volunteers varied schedules.
Even the IRS rewards volunteers! All volunteers who do volunteer work for organization can deduct 14 cents per mile (check the I.R.S. for periodic updates) for any driving that they do to our office or to any site in which they are performing a service. Keep a record of dates, reasons for trips, and miles driven, and take your qualified deduction on your Federal tax return.
