Volunteer Opportunities

If you are someone who enjoys working with people, exploring Pittsburgh, and learning about preservation, architecture, and history, then we welcome you to join PHLF as a tour guide. The more involved you become, the more rewarding your experience will be.

PHLF’s tour guides are the city’s best guides– the most knowledgeable and engaging. To join this exceptional team of volunteers, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be over the age of 18
  2. Obtain and maintain required clearances
  3. Commit to an orientation and training program designed to provide a foundation of knowledge about PHLF, our education programs, and the region’s rich architecture and history.
  4. Once orientation and initial training are completed, lead a minimum number of tours per year/season.
  5. Attend a majority of monthly docent meetings and participate in exciting learning experiences that enhance tour guides’ understanding of the built environment.

No prior experience is required, but tour guides must have a willingness to learn and a zeal for preservation, architecture, and history.

Gabe Funaro is one of 25 volunteer tour guides specially trained by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation staff. Thanks to the knowledge, energy, and commitment of its volunteer tour guides, PHLF is able to involve more than 10,000 people each year in its educational programs. College students and all ages of adults volunteer as tour guides.
