Adult Education

The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation offers continuing adult education courses through community universities and colleges. Classes are usually offered on a rotating basis in the spring, fall, and winter. At the moment, we are not offering any adult education classes. Below is a sample of the classes we have offered.

Pittsburgh’s Architectural Heritage Courses

Buildings of the 18th and 19th centuries

Part I presents a chronological look at some of Pittsburgh’s finest and most characteristic buildings, from the Neville House (c. 1785) in Collier Township to H. H. Richardson’s three great buildings of the mid-1880s. The class includes an illustrated lecture and walking tour.

Buildings of the first half of the 20th century

Part II continues the story of Pittsburgh’s buildings, beginning with the firm of Longfellow, Alden & Harlow (established in 1886 by two of H. H. Richardson’s senior designers) and explores regional Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, and Usonian buildings. The class includes an illustrated lecture and walking tour.

Buildings of the second half of the 20th century

Part III examines Pittsburgh’s recent architectural past from functionalism through the policies of urban renewal to the skyscrapers of the city today. The class includes an illustrated lecture and walking tour.

Discover Pittsburgh’s Art Deco masterpieces through a series of bus tours to theaters, schools, and -commercial and municipal buildings in the Pittsburgh region.

Interior Spaces of Downtown Landmarks

Through series of downtown walking tours, participants explore the interiors of civic, corporate, commercial, and religious buildings and discover how these architectural landmarks were designed to reflect the development of corporate power and industrial might in Pittsburgh.
