General Edward Braddock and his British and Colonial soldiers, including George Washington, set out to capture Fort Duquesne. But the French and Indians defeat them on July 9, at the “Battle of the Monongahela,” ten miles east of the Point, where Braddock, PA is today. Braddock had five horses shot under him and died of his wounds on July 13. Washington, who was Braddock’s aide-de-camp, had two horses shot under him and four bullets went through his clothes without touching him. Daniel Boone of Kentucky fame was a wagoner with the Braddock expedition.
